Upper Elementary News August 2008
Dear Parents of Students in Grades Three and Four, We thought you might like to read about some of the wonderful and significant events that the third and fourth grade faculty members have created for your children. I am constantly amazed at the skill and creativity of the Upper Elementary team, and I know you will enjoy anticipating both the fun and the learning that the students will experience as a result. Outlined in this newsletter are eight events that are either core curriculum or fine arts related, and we also wanted to add our soldier outreach initiative because it is a program in which we all participate together. Some of the events occur in classrooms on the designated day, and other events are special programs or performances for parents and/or students and teachers of other grade levels.
Third Grade Events
“The Emperor’s Club” Join us in our plight to master Roman history as third graders participate in this first of its kind history bee. Throughout our study of the Romans, students will acquire a significant body of knowledge about Ancient Rome that will prepare them for this culminating event. Each third grade history class will identify two consuls (Leaders of the Roman Senate) that will compete for the title of “Augustus” (Emperor of Rome) which means, “Revered One” in Latin, and was the title given to the emperors of Rome during the time of the Great Roman Empire. The final history bee will be called “The Emperor’s Club”. The Emperor’s Club is an oral competition much like the National Geography Bee that begins in fourth grade. The student crowned “Emperor” will be presented a gold laurel wreath, plaque, and a symbolic key to the city of Rome. Friday, November 21
“Innovations” Our third grade students will have the opportunity to learn about inventors and their inventions, and present their research from the inventor’s point of view. Students will act as the inventors, dress like the inventors, and share their inventions. Inventor presentations will be the result of the third graders learning to use the resource materials in the Parish library, visiting other libraries, and incorporating technology in their presentations. This project combines skills used in reading, writing, science, and technology. “Innovations” is an integrated learning experience that has become a Parish tradition. This year, students will enjoy the opportunity to educate the Parish dads because this event takes place on Dad’s Visiting Day! Friday, January 30
“Valhalla” Join us on a magical journey to “Valhalla”, Viking heaven in Old Norse Mythology. Third grade social studies students will take you on an entertaining historical adventure across the north seas to explore the world of the Vikings between 750 and 1,050 A.D. “Valhalla” is a one-hour historical drama that will be sure to entertain and inform. Just watch out for the berserkers! In keeping with past traditions, all third grade students will be involved in this production, and it will be professionally videotaped for parents to purchase. Friday, February 27
“Lawn Chair Literary Picnic” Join us for a morning of shared literary works during a spring literary picnic. Bring your favorite lawn chair or blanket and a sack lunch and join the fun as 3rd grade students participate in choral readings, poetry readings, reader’s theatre skits, prepared readings, and storytelling. In addition to student performances, the festival will include celebrity readers from our community, and a special mystery guest! May is the ideal time for students to share what they have learned, composed, or particularly enjoyed in language arts. Date TBA
